The spear is an ancient pole weapon, the oldest vestiges date back to prehistory. Used both for hunting and for war, it occupied an important place in most armies until the invention of firearms. It consists of a spear head attached to a wooden handle (or pole) and in some cases a metal heel was placed at the other end to bring balance to the weapon.
